Five held over jeweller robbery bid

Four men armed with axes and hammers have been halted by armed police as they attempted to rob a jewellers in a major shopping centre.

The men were caught as they smashed the windows of the shop on the ground floor of the Westfield Shopping Centre in Stratford, east London, shortly after midnight on Thursday.

The arrests followed an operation involving the Metropolitan Police's Flying Squad and officers from the SCO19 Specialist Firearms Command. No shots were fired during the incident.

A fifth male waiting in a vehicle outside left the scene but was later traced to an address in Islington.

All five remain in custody.
