Girl 'serious' as horse collapses
A 14-year-old girl suffered a serious head injury when a horse collapsed on top of her, an ambulance service has said.
The teenager was trapped under the horse after it collapsed in Great Witchingham, Norfolk.
The East of England Ambulance Service said the 999 call was received shortly after 3pm on Wednesday and the caller said the horse was dead.
Paramedics performed rapid sequence induction (RSI) - a pre-hospital procedure to anaesthetise and artificially ventilate the patient - and stabilised the girl's condition at the scene in Blackwater Lane.
She was then airlifted to Addenbrooke's hospital, Cambridge, for further treatment. The girl's condition was described as "stable".
Police said the girl was riding the horse before it collapsed on top of her and died.
A police spokesman said: "Although we're in the early stages of our investigation, early indications are that this was a tragic accident."
A joint police and Health and Safety Executive investigation is under way to examine the circumstances surrounding the incident.
