Huhne 'incorrect' on Hammond points
Liberal Democrat Chris Huhne's claims that Transport Secretary Philip Hammond was recently punished with penalty points for speeding are "incorrect", it has been claimed.
Earlier, the Energy Secretary appeared to divulge that his Tory Cabinet colleague had committed a potentially embarrassing driving misdemeanour.
But sources close to Mr Hammond said: "Chris Huhne should check his facts. Philip has always been open that he has had points in the past but they have now expired.
"To say he has been caught speeding recently is incorrect."
Mr Huhne is waiting to hear whether he will be prosecuted following allegations that he claimed his estranged wife Vicky Pryce was behind the wheel after he was caught speeding.
Appearing on the BBC Politics Show this morning, Mr Huhne was asked whether Mr Hammond was referring to him when he talked about "decent people" being caught out by the current limit.
Mr Huhne replied: "Actually, apparently Philip has recently broken the speed limit and got some points so I mean I put my hands up, I lost my licence from speeding so I was in a very good position to say that I should assure that obviously we shouldn't do that and we need to maintain the law."
