Israel and Hamas agree ceasefire

Hopes for an end to the bloodshed in Gaza have been boosted after Israel and Hamas agreed to a fresh ceasefire.

An Egyptian plan for another 72-hour truce which could pave the way for more fundamental negotiations has reportedly been approved by both sides.

The apparent breakthrough follows renewed violence since the last temporary deal lapsed.

More than a dozen Palestinians are said to have died in Israeli airstrikes over the weekend, while mortar and rocket fire from Gaza has resumed.
