John Bercow's marriage in crisis after 'wife Sally's affair with his cousin Alan'
Commons Speaker John Bercow's marriage was in jeopardy last night after his wife was reported to have had an affair with his cousin.
Sally Bercow is reported to have started a relationship with Alan Bercow, a lawyer, at the start of the election campaign, according to The Mail On Sunday. It is understood that after a series of arguments between Alan and Sally the affair is now over.
Alan Bercow's wife, Erica, insisted that her marriage was solid. Apparently confirming that the affair had taken place, she said: "We are very much together and that's all I want to say."
A friend of John Bercow told The Mail on Sunday the pair were living separately in the wake of the affair.
Yesterday Mrs Bercow appeared without her wedding ring outside her house in Battersea.
She told the Daily Telegraph it had been "a difficult marriage for a long time, primarily because we're living in Parliament and I hate it there".
She said her husband John was "not a weak man" who was "very forgiving". However she added: "But I'm not sure I want to be forgiven.
"Am I a good wife? I'm a terrible wife. I'm a terrible wife. I always have been. If I was John I wouldn't put up with me.
"I'm not even going to say that he'll take me back," she said.
