Remains found on farmland on the outskirts of Glasgow early today are those of missing student Karen Buckley, police have confirmed.

Karen Buckley's family said in a statement that they were "absolutely heartbroken".

A 21-year-old man who was detained for questioning on Wednesday has now been formally arrested in connection with Ms Buckley's death.

Ms Buckley, from Cork, was reported missing after a night out in the Scottish city on Saturday, and her disappearance sparked a four-day search involving a helicopter crew, search dogs and specialist police divers.

An occupational therapy student, Ms Buckley had arrived at the Sanctuary nightclub in Glasgow with friends at around 11.45pm. At around 1am she told friends she was going to the toilet, but failed to return and did not take her jacket.
