Killer carer is detained in secure unit
A carer has been detained indefinitely for strangling a "caring" and "deeply religious" grandmother in her own home, police said.
Felix Gutierrez-Cortez (34) killed Anna Maria Thomas at the house they shared in Wandsworth, south west London, in December 2013.
He was given an indeterminate sentence in a secure facility under the Mental Health Act.
It came after he was found guilty of her manslaughter by diminished responsibility at the Old Bailey on March 4.
The court was told how 61-year-old Ms Thomas had given him a place to stay in exchange for Gutierrez-Cortez acting as her carer.
Her body was found in a bedroom, covered in a duvet and with a pillow placed under her head, on the evening of Tuesday, December 10, after the defendant called 999.
Gutierrez-Cortez was subsequently arrested and sectioned under the Mental Health Act.
