Match Of The Day host Gary Lineker and his wife Danielle have split after six years of marriage.

The former England footballer (55) said the couple were still the "greatest of friends", and his ex-wife added she would "cherish" their relationship.

Lineker tweeted: "Thank you all for your kind words. @DanielleBux and I had many wonderful years together. We remain very close and the greatest of friends."

Bux added: "We have shared the most incredible 8 years that I will always cherish. We will remain the best of friends."

A spokesman for the pair said: "Gary and Danielle have decided to end their marriage. They remain the greatest of friends."

The couple, who have no children, married in Italy in 2009. That same year, they starred in Northern Exposure, a much-maligned show in which they travelled around Northern Ireland.

The marriage was Lineker's second and Bux's first. Their decree nisi was granted at Southampton County Court.
