A 33-year-old who won £1 million on a scratchcard has splashed out on a seven-seater people carrier as he is about to become a father for the fifth time.

Kenny Ashton, from Sunderland, did not fancy a Ferrari but picked a second-hand Ford Galaxy after his life-changing win last week.

His wife Gillian, 26, is about to give birth to their first son together, who they will call Braxson.

The double-glazing canvasser yelled with joy before spraying champagne for the cameras at Ramside Hall near Durham where he talked about his win.

Mr Ashton, who also has a three-year-old daughter with Gillian and three children from a previous relationship, said: "I've never had material possessions so I don't see why I should start now.

"A seven-seater is what I need. We have to take two cars out if we have all the kids together.

"We can finally go out as a family now."

He has also bought a Ford Focus for his wife and the couple plan to move from their two-bedroom rented home to buy a bigger house in Sunderland.

The win, days before Gillian is due to give birth, could not have been timed better.

"We woke up on Friday morning worrying how we would pay this week's direct debits," he said. "Now everything has changed."

Mr Ashton had dreamt of winning the Lottery and picked a £5 scratchcard from a Sainsbury's supermarket in Team Valley, Gateshead, on Friday which caught his eye.

At first he thought he had won £5 before he finally realised it was much more.

"I just couldn't believe it and the news hasn't really sunk in.

"The word I keep using is 'ridiculous'."

Mr Ashton was a holiday camp entertainer and a singer in a bar in Spain who does not drink but admitted as he sipped the Lottery champagne: "I could get used to this."
