Man (42) in court over flying of drones

Published 08/05/2015

A man has appeared in court over allegations that he illegally flew a drone with a camera attached over packed Premier League football stadiums in the first police prosecution of its kind in England.

Nigel Wilson (42) made his first appearance at Westminster Magistrates Court yesterday accused of a total of 17 breaches of the Air Navigation Order.

While the Civil Aviation Authority successfully brought two similar cases to court in 2013 and 2014, it is the first time a person has been prosecuted by the Crown Prosecution Service following a police-led operation.

Wilson admitted two counts of the offence, specifically that he did not maintain visual, unaided contact with an unmanned surveillance aircraft to monitor its flight path on September 27 last year on the River Thames.

He also admitted committing the same offence at the Etihad Stadium, Manchester, on October 18 last year.

He denied other charges of flying a "small unmanned surveillance aircraft" over venues including Arsenal's Emirates Stadium and Liverpool's Anfield ground.
