Man accused over mosque stabbings

A man will stand trial today charged with attempting to murder a police officer who was stabbed inside a mosque.

Mohamoud Elmi is also alleged to have attacked two worshippers who were injured during evening prayers at a mosque in Ward End, Birmingham, on June 15 last year.

Elmi, of Ward End Hall Grove, Washwood Heath, will go on trial at Birmingham Crown Court this afternoon.

The 32-year-old pleaded not guilty at a previous hearing to two counts of attempted murder and an allegation of wounding.

His trial, presided over by Mrs Justice Carr, is expected to last for about two weeks.
