A man and child have died in a car crash on Christmas Day.

Bedfordshire Police said the man was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash on the A421 on the outskirts of Bedford at 11.10pm.

His three-year-old child was airlifted to Addenbrooke's Hospital, Cambridge, but pronounced dead a short time later.

A woman in her 30s, who was also in the vehicle, was taken to the same hospital where she remains in a serious condition.

Officers said all three occupants of the car are from Bedfordshire.

Sergeant Simon Goldsmith said: "I would appeal to anyone who witnessed the collision to call police.

"Any death on the road is tragic but this incident is even more poignant given the day it occurred.

"Next of kin have been informed and our specialist family liaison officers are providing support to relatives."

Anyone with information is asked to call police on 101.
