A man has been charged over a string of assaults on elderly victims who had sneezed in public.

Police received a number of complaints from people aged from 65 to 82 who said they had been slapped while sneezing in Carlisle city centre in February and March this year.

A spokesman for Cumbria Constabulary said: "Stephen Jackson, 49, of Shaddongate, Carlisle, has been charged with four counts of assault by beating, one count of common assault and one count of using threatening behaviour to cause harassment, alarm and distress."

Jackson will appear at North Cumbria Magistrates' Court on June 30, added the spokesman.
