Man charged with preacher's murder

A man will appear in court after being charged with the murder of Syrian-born preacher Abdul Hadi Arwani.

Leslie Cooper, 36, will appear at Camberwell Green Magistrates' Court in London today, the Crown Prosecution Service said.

Mr Arwani, a critic of the Assad regime, was shot dead in the Greenhill area of the capital on April 7.

Rob Davis, from the CPS London Homicide Unit, said: "The Crown Prosecution Service has today authorised the Metropolitan Police to charge Leslie Cooper, 36, with the murder of Abdul Hadi Arwani. Mr Arwani was shot dead in the Greenhill area of London on April 7 2015.

"This decision was taken in accordance with the Code for Crown Prosecutors."

Mr Arwani, 48, a father of six, was found dead in a parked car.

A post-mortem examination found he died from gunshot wounds and c ounter-terrorism officers were tasked with investigating his murder.

Mr Arwani was an imam at the An Noor mosque in Acton, west London, from 2005 to 2011.
