Man convicted over shooting burglar

A man who shot dead a burglar has been cleared of murder.

However, jurors at the Old Bailey found Raymond Andes guilty of manslaughter.

Isaiah Bovell, 21, was hit by a bullet in his head at a ground floor bedroom window.

The prosecution said he was with two other men and intended to break into the flat in Clapham, south London, where Andes, 39. had a cannabis factory.

Andes, who pleaded guilty to cultivating cannabis and having a prohibited weapon, said he acted out of fear because the thought the intruder could have been armed.

The jury found him guilty of manslaughter on a 10-2 majority. He was remanded in custody to be sentenced on Friday.

Zoe Johnson, prosecuting, told the judge: "This killing occurred against a background of a criminal enterprise - he had this factory in this flat.

"The primary reason why he had this firearm was the need to protect this criminal enterprise."

When officers searched Andes' flat, they uncovered a 9mm handgun, along with seven cartridges - one of them spent, jurors heard.

They also found 75 plants in a cannabis factory capable of producing £36,000 worth of drugs a year, behind a false wall in what had been the sitting room.
