A 70-year-old man has died after being knocked down in Londonderry after being struck by a vehicle on one of the city's major routes last night.

Police were investigating the circumstances and closed the Culmore Road between the Greenhaw Road and Pennyburn roundabout.

It was understood the incident happened close to the entrance to Troy Park.

A Northern Ireland Ambulance Service spokesman said: "We got a call at 6.42pm and we arrived at the scene with a rapid response paramedic and an A&E crew three minutes later.

"There was a report of a 70-year-old male pedestrian having being knocked down and we took him to Altnagelvin Hospital in a very serious condition."

SDLP leader and MLA for Foyle Colum Eastwood tweeted: "Very sad news. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family."

DUP MLA Gary Middleton said his "thoughts and prayers are with all of those involved, including this man who has sadly lost his life".

Diversions remained in place last night and motorists were advised by the PSNI to take an alternative route for their journey.
