Man dies after 'false' gun report

An investigation is under way after a man died having been questioned by police officers regarding a false gun report.

Northumbria Police received a call last night at around 6.37pm, saying there were men with guns inside an address in Toward Road, Sunderland.

Having attended the house, officers concluded the report was false.

They then attended the house of the caller, on Wetherby Road, but during the visit the 36-year-old man became unwell and an ambulance was called.

Despite being treated at the scene by paramedics, he was taken to Sunderland Royal Hospital where he died.

An Independent Police Complaints Commission probe has now been launched to investigate the circumstances surrounding the man's death.
