Man dies after hospital window leap

A man has died after jumping from a second-floor window of a hospital, police said.

The 40-year-old died at the West Cumberland Hospital in Whitehaven, Cumbria.

Police said he leapt from a second-floor window and an investigation is under way.

The force would not say whether the man was a patient or whether police officers were present when the incident happened.

A spokeswoman said: "Cumbria Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of a 40-year-old man at the West Cumberland Hospital at approximately 10pm, Wednesday 8th May.

"It is reported that he jumped out of a second-floor window at the hospital at 7.30pm earlier that evening.

"Officers will be working to formally identify the man and inform the immediate family.

"The Health and Safety Executive has been informed and will be making a joint inquiry with the police."

A spokeswoman for North Cumbria University Hospitals NHS Trust said: "This is a very tragic case and our deepest sympathy goes out to the family.

"This case is now subject to a police investigation; because of this we cannot comment any further."
