A man has died while officers searched his home, prompting a police investigation.

Northumbria Police executed a search warrant at the address in Sunderland, during which the 43-year-old man became unwell, the force said.

Paramedics were called to the property on High Street, just off Easington Lane in Houghton-le-Spring, on Monday evening, but the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

The matter is being referred to the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC).

Northumbria Police said: "Inquiries are ongoing into the incident and due to the contact between officers and the man the matter will be referred to the IPCC, as is procedure in the circumstances."
