Man dies in Eastbourne Pier fall

A man fell while working on the fire-damaged Eastbourne Pier, and died from his injuries.

Emergency services were called shortly after 4pm yesterday to reports that a man had fallen from the pier, Sussex Police said.

An air ambulance landed on the beach, but the 44-year-old from Cumbria was declared dead at the scene and taken to Eastbourne mortuary.

His next of kin have been advised. He has not been formally named at this stage.

Sussex Police will be joined by colleagues from the Health and Safety Executive to investigate the incident.

On July 30, fire destroyed part of the 144-year-old pier.

At its height, up to 80 firefighters tackled the inferno on the Grade II listed Victorian attraction, which left the dome-shaped amusement arcade near the entrance a scorched shell.

No one was trapped by the blaze and the pier was evacuated quickly.
