Man found with life-threatening injuries after town centre attack

A man believed to have been assaulted in a town centre street is fighting for his life in hospital.

The man was found with life-threatening injuries in St James' Street, Newport, Isle of Wight, just before 4am on Sunday.

A Hampshire police spokesman said: "It appears that the man was assaulted. He is currently in a life threatening condition and being treated at Southampton General Hospital."

The spokesman said that the area had been cordoned off with road closures in place while police investigate the attack.
