Man held over city sex attacks
A man has been arrested over two alleged sex attacks carried out on the same street.
The 21-year-old is being held by Strathclyde Police in connection with the two separate incidents on James Watt Street, near Broomielaw in Glasgow, on Wednesday night.
It is alleged that a 20-year-old woman was attacked and, a short time later, a 22-year-old woman was raped in the same place.
Strathclyde Police said both women are being supported by sexual offences liaison officers.
A report will be sent to the procurator fiscal, and the man is expected to appear in court on Monday.
Chief Superintendent Val Thomson, from Strathclyde Police, said: "Increased patrols will continue in the city centre throughout the festive period in response to the increased number of people socialising within the area.
"Our commitment remains to keep people safe whilst they enjoy the city and I hope that the swift arrest in relation to this matter assures people that we make every effort to do so.
"People should come into the city and relax and enjoy themselves but I would also urge them to continue to take the basic steps to ensure their own safety.
"Those are: to make sure someone knows where they are and how they are getting home, to remain with friends throughout the evening and if they find themselves separated from their friends to ensure they remain in the well-lit streets and take the most direct route to where they want to be.
"Overall, I would urge people to get in touch with the police if they are concerned for their own or someone else's safety, or about someone's behaviour."
