Man held over girlfriend's death
A 36-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murdering his girlfriend while on holiday in the Canary Islands, police have said.
Christopher Chittock, of Ipswich, appeared in court on Thursday after extradition proceedings were launched in relation to the death of Sarah Shields. The 23-year-old was found in the sea off Gran Canaria on July 7.
A spokeswoman for City of Westminster Magistrates' Court, in London, said a European arrest warrant was issued for Chittock. She said Chittock appeared in court on Thursday and was remanded in custody to another hearing next Wednesday.
A Suffolk police spokeswoman said: "Detectives from the joint Norfolk and Suffolk major investigation team produced the male to City of Westminster Magistrates' Court. On behalf of the Spanish authorities, the European arrest warrant was executed and at 1pm the male was arrested on suspicion of the murder of Sarah Shields."
Chittock is due to appear at Ipswich Crown Court on September 17 after being charged with perverting the course of justice following Miss Shields' death.
British and Spanish police launched an inquiry in July when Miss Shields was reported missing after failing to return to her home in Ipswich.
