Man in court on Linzi murder charge
A man has appeared in court charged with the murder of his ex-girlfriend.
Mother-of-two Linzi Ashton, 25, was discovered with multiple injuries at her home in Winton, Salford, Greater Manchester, on June 29.
Michael Cope, 28, was arrested on Friday night at an address in Leigh, Greater Manchester.
Cope made a one-minute appearance at Manchester Magistrates' Court and was further remanded in custody.
Handcuffed to a prison officer, a bearded Cope - wearing a dark grey Adidas top and light grey jogging bottoms - confirmed his name, date of birth and address.
The court heard the matter was too serious to be heard before magistrates and the case was adjourned until Tuesday when Cope will appear at Manchester Crown Court for a preliminary hearing.
Cope, of no fixed address, is also accused of separate offences of rape and assault against Miss Ashton.
The barmaid made complaints to Greater Manchester Police in April and May that Cope had raped and beaten her.
Her body was discovered at her home in Westbourne Road.
Senior detectives described her injuries, which included pressure to the neck, as "sustained and vicious".
