Margaret Thatcher gift settles £1m tax bill
More than £1m of inheritance tax owed by Margaret Thatcher's estate has been covered in lieu by the donation of the former Prime Minister's papers to the nation.
Arts Council England confirmed receipt of the gift, containing three personal handwritten memoirs, and said the documents would be available at Churchill Archives Centre in Cambridge.
The papers settled £1,013,250 of tax. A key document is a previously unpublished 128 page, 17,000 word handwritten memoir of the Falklands War, written over Easter 1983, a year after the Argentine invasion.
The documents complete the documentary record of Baroness Thatcher's life, including much of her personal material from her post-Downing Street life.
