Met slammed in newspaper probe
The Metropolitan police force should be stripped of its powers to investigate alleged phone hacking at the News of the World newspaper and a new force called in, it was urged last night.
New criticism of Scotland Yard's handling of the affair was triggered by the disclosure of court documents which appeared to link another senior newspaper executive to the illegal operation.
The News of the World suspended its assistant editor Ian Edmondson on Wednesday after a “serious allegation” was made about his professional conduct.
Chris Bryant MP, the shadow minister for constitutional reform, said: “The investigation is running the danger of bringing the Met into disrepute.
“I believe it shouldn't be carried out by the Met — another force should be carrying it out.”
