Murder case mum blames stepfather
A mother accused of starving and murdering her four-year-old son has told a jury he died after being beaten about the head by his stepfather.
Magdelena Luczak alleged that her partner, Mariusz Krezolek, also tried to strangle her as he twice attacked Daniel Pelka in a bedroom and a box room at their home.
Giving evidence on what would have been Daniel's sixth birthday, Luczak claimed to have witnessed the separate assaults on her son after hearing him screaming.
Luczak (27) and Krezolek (34) are alleged to have murdered Daniel during an "incomprehensible" and escalating campaign of cruelty at their house in Coventry.
The pair, both originally from Poland, deny charges of murder and causing or allowing Daniel's death.
Taking to the witness box in the seventh week of her trial at Birmingham Crown Court, Luczak claimed Daniel was attacked by Krezolek after returning from school on March 1 last year.
She told the court: "I was in the living room and then I heard some screams. Mariusz was shouting at Daniel.
"I went upstairs, Daniel was crying, Mariusz was shouting at him because Daniel had wet himself.
"Mariusz was shouting at Daniel and I told him 'He is in fear of you'. Mariusz hit him in the back of his head and Daniel fell."
The trial was adjourned until today.
