Murder victim stabbed three times

Published 30/04/2013

A 75-year-old man attacked as he returned from evening prayers had been stabbed three times, police have said.

Father-of-seven Mohammed Saleem Chaudhry was stabbed in the back in an attack just yards from his home in Small Heath, Birmingham, on Monday night.

West Midlands Police said post-mortem tests had revealed he died as a result of three stab wounds to the back.

Speaking outside his home, his 45-year-old daughter Shazia Khan said: "We're just so shocked. For him to lose his life in such a brutal way.

"It's very tragic. He was very well respected in the community. He's such a lovely man, I just can't believe it. Everyone old and young knew him.

"Neighbours have told us they heard screams and called for an ambulance. It's thought he may have tried to fight off his attacker."

Mr Chaudhry used to walk to the mosque five times each day from the home he shared with his wife Said Begum.

Mrs Khan, who lives in London, said: "We just hope the police find who did this. It was him today, it could be someone else tomorrow.

"To kill a defenceless old man who had a walking stick - well it's just terrible."

West Midlands Police were called just after 10.30pm last night after reports that a man had suffered serious injuries. He was taken to Heartlands Hospital, where he was pronounced dead just after 11pm.
