Peter Hain hailed for fighting apartheid
Former Northern Ireland Secretary Peter Hain has received a prestigious award from South Africa for his work fighting its infamous apartheid regime.
The former Neath MP received the Order of the Companions of OR Tambo, which is given to foreign nationals who have made a significant contribution to peace.
Lord Hain of Neath (65) spent his childhood in South Africa and joined the battle for non-whites to have the right to vote.
He fled to the UK at 16 amid fears for his safety, but continued to campaign against the regime in his former homeland.
