Overstretched A&E departments have spent one of the busiest weekends of the year dealing with people who gorged on Easter Eggs.

One hospital was forced to plead to people who had overindulged to stay away.

South Tees Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust issued a Facebook post asking overeaters to seek help elsewhere.

"Believe it or not, we do have people coming into A&E with stomach aches caused by over-indulgence," it wrote on Sunday.

"If you've had one too many Easter eggs and a big Sunday dinner, you're likely to feel better after a rest at home and drinking plenty of water.

"Some pharmacies are open this evening if you do require indigestion or other remedies for stomach problems. Please help us to keep A&E free for emergencies."

The post attracted a few scathing comments including one person who wrote: "What a waste of NHS resources. Exercise some self-discipline for goodness sake."

Easter bank holiday weekend is traditionally one of the busiest in the year for A&Es.
