Police are investigating the "suspicious" death of woman whose body was discovered in a lay-by.

She was found by a passing motorist on the Amersham Road, A413, in Gerrards Cross, Buckinghamshire, shortly after 8.30am, Thames Valley Police said.

The cause of death is unknown and detectives from the force's major crime unit are investigating.

The woman has yet to be identified and next of kin have not been informed, police said. A post-mortem examination is due to take place tomorrow.

Superintendent Yvette Hitch said: "Officers are at the scene working to establish the circumstances surrounding the death of woman. We are in the very early stages of our investigation.

"I would like to speak to anyone who has any information about this incident or who may have seen anything out of the ordinary in the area - please call 101 as soon as possible.

"We are working with the Highways Agency to minimise disruption in the area. A scene watch remains in place.

"Officers from the local neighbourhood team are making house to house enquiries and patrolling locally to provide reassurance. If anyone has any concerns, please feel free to approach an officer."

Anyone with information is asked to call police or contact the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
