Police officer hurt in hit-and-run

A police officer has been taken to hospital after he was knocked down in a hit-and-run incident.

The officer was performing a routine stop on a vehicle in Luton Road, Chatham, Kent, when he was hit by a vehicle as he got out of his car at 6.50pm on Saturday.

The vehicle was driven off and later found abandoned, according to Kent Police.

A police helicopter was scrambled to assist in the hunt for the driver who has not been found.

A Kent Police spokesman said: "Officers performed a routine stop on a vehicle in Luton Road, Chatham.

"After getting out of the police car, the officer was struck by a vehicle which then made off. It was later found abandoned in Constitution Road.

"Inquiries to trace the driver are ongoing and officers were assisted by a police helicopter.

"The police officer was taken to hospital to have his injuries assessed although they are not life-threatening."

The injured officer was later discharged from hospital, according to police.
