Shocking pictures have been released of an attack victim laying battered and bruised in hospital.

The victim suffered a broken neck, a bleed to the brain, a fractured eye socket and cuts and bruises, and remains in hospital.

The 38-year-old, who has not been named by police, was assaulted in the Gover area of St Austell, Cornwall, between 11.55pm on August 14 and 6am the following day.

He was walking home along the Trenance Road and Blowinghouse Hill area when he was attacked by an unknown assailant.

Inspector Ed Gard, who is appealing for witnesses, said: "We have taken the unusual steps of releasing images of the victim which show the shocking and serious nature of the injuries the man suffered.

"He was walking home after a night out when he suffered these injuries. We also believe that he remained unconscious for quite some time before being discovered.

"The victim's injuries include a broken neck, bleed to the brain, fractured eye socket and cuts and bruises.

"We want to hear from anyone who was in the Gover area from before midnight through to the early hours of Monday morning who may have seen something suspicious or who witnessed the attack."
