Police seek ‘reckless’ cyclist in near miss at level crossing
Man barges his way through a barrier carrying a bicycle and just misses an oncoming train.
Police are investigating after a viral video showed a man barging his bike through a level crossing barrier and narrowly missing a train.
The footage, which has been shared hundreds of times on Twitter, shows the cyclist in London approaching the barrier, which is in the down position, and hauling his bike over it.
As he goes to mount the bike to cross the train track in North Sheen, a South West train passes at high speed, missing him by a small distance.
British Transport Police confirmed they are investigating the incident, and called the man “stupid and reckless”.
“Jumping over a level crossing barrier is extremely dangerous. Trains travel at extraordinary speeds so before you have time to react, you may be struck and seriously injured or even killed,” they said.
British Transport Police are asking anyone with information on the man to send a text to 61016 or call 0800 40 50 40 quoting reference 510.
Network Rail said they are assisting police with finding the man.
Allan Spence, head of passenger and public safety at Network Rail, said: “It’s incredibly frustrating that a grown man can behave so foolishly even when others are trying to warn him of the clear danger.”
