Probe after man's death in custody

The police watchdog has launched an investigation following the death of a suspect in custody.

Officers arrested the 40-year-old man at 9.25pm on December 28 following a fire in College Street in Burnham-on-Sea, Somerset.

He was taken to the custody centre at Bridgwater Express Park and charged with being drunk and disorderly and hindering a member of the fire service.

Avon and Somerset Police said the man was remanded in police custody to appear at Taunton Deane Magistrates' Court on December 30.

"At approximately 4am on Tuesday December 30, a check was conducted on the man and he was found to be unresponsive," a police spokesman said.

"Paramedics attended, but the man was pronounced dead at approximately 4.10am."

The spokesman said the incident was reported to the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) shortly after the man was pronounced dead.

The IPCC has started an independent investigation into the matter.
