Rapist jailed after mother brought him back from Romania
A rapist who attacked his victim on Christmas Day has been jailed after his mother brought him back from his home country of Romania to face justice in the UK.
Tudor Tofoi, of High Street, Dover, Kent, was found guilty by a jury at Canterbury Crown Court and has been jailed for 15 years of which he must serve at least 10 years being being considered for parole with an additional three years on licence.
The 21-year-old was identified after a woman in her 20s reported to police that she had been raped in the early hours of Christmas Day last year in Dover.
The two attackers fled the scene but Tofoi was traced through CCTV footage from shortly before the attack.
A Kent Police spokeswoman said: "After initially leaving the country Tofoi was located and brought back to the UK by his mother, prior to being arrested.
"When interviewed by officers of the Kent and Essex serious crime directorate, Tofoi claimed the sex between himself and the victim had been consensual. However a jury rejected Tofoi's account during the trial and he was convicted."
During sentencing Judge Adele Williams told Tofoi that he had carried out "a violent and brutal rape" which had caused his victim to suffer continuing psychological harm.
Detective Inspector Lee Whitehead said: "This was a violent and cowardly attack on a vulnerable lady.
"I want to praise his victim who has been courageous throughout the entire process and together with the superb support from her family, has played an important part in getting this dangerous man convicted. We are working with the Crown Prosecution Service to facilitate the return of the second suspect to the UK."
