Rio Ferdinand donates presents worth £500,000 to children's charity
Former England and Manchester United footballer Rio Ferdinand has donated £500,000 worth of presents to children living in poverty this Christmas.
The soccer star and the team at his restaurant Rosso pledged their support to the Cash for Kids Mission Christmas appeal run by Manchester radio station Key 103, which asks people to buy an extra gift to give to a disadvantaged child.
Speaking to radio host Mike Toolan on air on Thursday morning, Ferdinand said: "Me and the guys at Rosso, we have seen what's been going on in the city and obviously Christmas is a time when families want to get each other presents and there's obviously people that are less fortunate than we are, so we want to try and help them.
"We're donating £500,000 worth of toys."
He added: "We're not looking for a thank you, we just want to help some people out and if we can help some people, then great."
The former Manchester United captain later posted a message on his Instagram page which said: "I'm glad that my restaurant @rossorestaurant and I can be involved @key103manchester Cash for Kids campaign donating £500,000.00.... hopefully we will put a smile on locals kids' faces this Christmas!"
