School nurses are to become "young carers champions" in a bid to help youngsters whose lives are overshadowed by looking after their family members, ministers said.

Children who are carers frequently have health problems themselves, are victims of bullying and are often absent from school, officials said.

The Department of Health said there are around 700,000 child carers in the UK - many of them caring for ill family members for 50 hours a week.

Health Minister Dr Dan Poulter said England's 1,200 school nurses can help support such children.

"Young carers are often under incredible pressure both at home and at school," he said.

"School nurses can do a lot to give young carers a voice and help ease that pressure. Our plans will help them do just that."
