Six people have been arrested in Dover on suspicion of Syria-related terrorism offences, West Midlands Police said.

In a series of tweets, police said five men and one woman were detained at around 8am today in the departure zone of the south coast port.

They are currently being questioned at a police station in the West Midlands area while searches at a number of addresses in Birmingham are ongoing.

The force said: "The suspects, who are not a family group and were not accompanied by children, did not pose any immediate risk to public safety."

Four of the men arrested are from Birmingham and in their 20s, police said. A man aged 26 and a 23-year-old woman of no fixed address were also held.

"The arrests are part of an on-going investigation."

Police are continuing to search a number of addresses in Birmingham.
