Soap fans want Corrie girls to wed
Soap fans have revealed their big wish for the new year is to see Coronation Street's teenage lesbian couple tie the knot.
A total of 44% of viewers surveyed picked young lovers Sian Powers (Sacha Parkinson) and Sophie Webster (Brooke Vincent) as the couple they would most like to see marry in 2011.
EastEnders' Syed Masood (Marc Elliott) and Christian Clarke (John Partridge) were the next favourite, with 21% of fans hoping they would get hitched.
The poll of more than 1,000 readers of Inside Soap magazine comes amid reports that Corrie's Sean Tully (Antony Cotton) is to wed old flame Marcus Dent (Charlie Condou) in the soap's first civil partnership.
Barman Sean was also voted the character that viewers want to see more of next year.
Corrie's Eileen Grimshaw (Sue Cleaver) emerged as the soapland figure most fans want to find love, followed by EastEnders' Jean Slater (Gillian Wright).
Weatherfield's Fiz Stape (Jennie McAlpine), whose hapless husband John (Graeme Hawley) has been embroiled in two deaths this year, was top of the list of characters who should ditch their partners.
Fans also said they want to see fewer affairs and more love stories in soapland next year.
Steven Murphy, editor of Inside Soap magazine, said: "After a year of heartbreak, death and scandal in soapland, fans want to see some happily-ever-after storylines in 2011.
"If Sian and Sophie do get married next year, we'll most definitely be having a party at the Inside Soap offices."
