Stabbing death suspect detained

A man suspected of stabbing his flatmate to death has been detained under the Mental Health Act.

The 36-year-old man was initially arrested on Friday after a disturbance in the Handsworth area of Birmingham.

A man aged in his 50s was taken to hospital from the scene of the incident, which happened at about 9.20am in Thornhill Road, but died a short time later from multiple stab wounds.

A police spokesman said the 36-year-old had been sectioned under the Mental Health Act last night.

The spokesman added: "He will be assessed by mental health experts who will determine if he is fit to stand trial or be held indefinitely in a secure hospital."
