Suspended top policeman is found dead at his home
Former PSNI Chief Constable Sir Hugh Orde has paid tribute to a senior police officer who has been found dead at his home.
Deputy Chief Constable David Ainsworth, of Wiltshire Police, had been the subject of a conduct investigation.
He was removed from regular duties last September as South Wales Police conducted an external inquiry.
Wiltshire Police said it was not treating the death as suspicious.
A police spokesman said: “We can confirm that Wiltshire Police's Deputy Chief Constable David Ainsworth was found dead at his home this morning.
“Our thoughts are very much with David's family and friends as they come to terms with the sad news. We are offering them our full support.”
Association of Chief Police Officers president Sir Hugh said the death of Mr Ainsworth (49) had come “as a shock to the policing community”.
“David made a valuable contribution to policing, not just at the force level, but also with his work nationally around vehicle crime and forensic procurement,” he said.
