Thief who stole death fall grandmother's bag is jailed
A thief who was branded a "scumbag" by his victim's family has been jailed for stealing the handbag of a grandmother seconds after she fell to her death from a motorway bridge.
Sean Earle (26) put his hand to his face and shook his head as he was jailed for six months while his mother wept in the public gallery at Salford and Manchester Magistrates Court.
Sat near them were the widower and daughter of mother-of-three Linda Clarke, whose bag Earle snatched as his vulnerable victim fell to her death.
The family said they had "utter contempt" for the defendant.
Mrs Clarke (55) had cut her wrists and walked out of hospital before sitting on a 60ft ledge over the road. After she plunged to the ground, Earle "saw his opportunity" to steal her bag before running off.
Earle, of Trevelyan Street, Eccles, Salford, made no attempt to help or call emergency services, the court heard. He admitted theft of the bag and contents, including Mrs Clarke's iPhone, which was worth around £350, at an earlier hearing.
