Police have issued an appeal over an attack in which a gang of five thugs broke a teenager's jaw.

The 18-year-old was set upon at 2.30am on Saturday as he walked along the Stewartstown Road in west Belfast.

Local SDLP MLA Alex Attwood condemned the attack and urged anyone with information to contact the police.

"To be set upon by a gang, to be beaten up and to suffer such serious injury has no place in west Belfast," he said. "These incidents often lead to serious injury and are a threat to life itself."

Appealing for witnesses, Constable Craig Convey added: "Please call 101, quoting reference number 1263 of 23/07/16."
