Tories mocked as Anna Soubry admits she has no question for PM

Speaker John Bercow selected Ms Soubry to put a question to the Prime Minister during a statement on the G20 summit.

Conservative former minister Anna Soubry prompted laughter in the Commons after admitting she had no questions to ask Theresa May.

Speaker John Bercow selected Ms Soubry to put a question to the Prime Minister during a statement on the G20 summit.

Mr Bercow said the Broxtowe MP would demonstrate how to do this concisely given the time pressure on business in the chamber.

But MPs burst out laughing after Ms Soubry replied: “That’s very kind of you, Mr Speaker, but I didn’t actually have a question.”

A shout of “Resign” was heard from one Labour MP, with Mr Bercow and Ms Soubry both mocked.

Mr Bercow added: “The answer is… Order! Order! I didn’t imagine it in my sleep, the right honourable lady was standing.

“If she ceased to do so I was not conscious of that fact, but she has leapt to her feet with alacrity and the House is in a state of eager anticipation and bated breath.”

Ms Soubry joked: “Mr Speaker, I always take the opportunity to say something.”

She then asked Mrs May about global efforts to tackle modern slavery.
