Two British men have died after drowning off the coast of Malta, the Foreign Office has confirmed.

Local police say that they got into difficulties at around 3.30pm on Saturday, while swimming in the Blue Lagoon in Comino.

An FCO spokesman said: "We can confirm the death of two British nationals in Malta on May 23. We are providing assistance to their families at this difficult time."

Members of the Armed Forces of Malta immediately attended the scene to assist and one man was taken on a private boat to the nearby town of Imgarr, while the other was airlifted to hospital.

But the Malta police said that both the 35-year-olds died. The men have not yet been identified, but the BBC reports that one is believed to be from Birmingham.
