Two people have died in a house fire, emergency services said.

A man and a woman were pronounced dead after the blaze in Barnsley, South Yorkshire, at around 6.50pm yesterday.

An investigation has been launched into the cause of the fire.

Emergency services were called to the property on Cherry Tree Street, Elsecar, yesterday evening.

A South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said: " Two people have died following a serious house fire in Barnsley.

"Firefighters rescued an adult male and adult female from the fire on Cherry Tree Street, Elsecar.

"But despite the considerable efforts of firefighters and ambulance crews at the scene, both sadly passed away."

South Yorkshire Police said the victims had not yet been formally identified and investigations were under way to establish if the fire was suspicious.

Further details are expected to be released today, the fire service said.
