Woman dies in freezing lake fall
A woman has died after falling into a freezing lake at Pontefract Racecourse in West Yorkshire.
The woman was pulled from the lake and taken to Pontefract General Infirmary where she died, a police spokesman said. The area was cordoned off for it to be examined.
The circumstances of the death are being investigated but the death is not being treated as suspicious, police said.
Weather conditions also proved treacherous for motorists, with a driver left fighting for his life in hospital after he was hit by an out of control car in snowy conditions on the M1.
The 40-year-old from Wallsend, North Tyneside, was injured in a multiple vehicle pile up on the M1 near Sheffield.
The crash, involving a lorry and three cars, happened when the man's Ford Focus skidded on ice and came to rest on the hard shoulder, facing the wrong way up the road. After he was helped out of the car by a passing lorry driver, both men were hit by another car that had spun out of control.
Meanwhile, police are investigating if a motorcyclist who was killed in a crash involving a lorry in Crawley, West Sussex, was the victim of icy weather conditions. The crash happened near to the A264 and A23 link road at Broadfield South.
