A woman has been arrested after a five-year-old girl fell from a first-floor window.

Police and paramedics responded to a report that the child had fallen from the window of a home in Newbury Avenue, Gateshead at around 7.15am on Wednesday.

The child was taken to the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle and is in a stable condition, Northumbria Police said.

The 48-year-old woman was arrested on suspicion of assault and remains in police custody.

Inquiries are ongoing, a spokesman for the force added.
