Woman held over fatal M-way crash

A 36-year-old woman has been arrested after a fatal crash closed a busy stretch of motorway.

Leicestershire Police said a man, believed to be from London, died and three people were injured, two seriously, following a collision involving a lorry and seven cars on the M1 at about 6.41pm last night.

The motorway remained shut northbound between junctions 21a and 22 near Leicester this morning. It was expected to remain closed through the rush hour, with diversions in place along the A46 and A50. Two lanes of the southbound carriageway were reopened overnight.

A section of the motorway is being resurfaced after diesel spilled on to the road. Police said the serious collision investigation unit was examining the circumstances of the crash to piece together what happened.

In a statement, a force spokesman said: "One man, who's believed to be from London, has died and three other people have been taken to hospital, two of them with serious injuries.

"A 36-year-old woman has been arrested in connection with the incident.

"Motorists are being asked to be patient while the emergency services and other agencies deal with a very complex situation."
